POSITION SUMMARY

The HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic performs general maintenance of all types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems throughout the Greystone and Copia campuses. The HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic works as part of the Facilities team to ensure a safe and fully functional work and educational environment.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for the installation, preventive maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and diagnosis of air-conditioning, refrigeration and associated air handling and control systems.
• Analyzes blueprints, specifications, and manufacturer’s literature as necessary.
• Performs preventive maintenance on all HVAC and Refrigeration systems as required and makes recommendations for a preventative maintenance schedule to the management team.
• Completes work orders as assigned. Diagnoses the causes of any HVAC/R problems & failures to identify the root cause. Identifies equipment or systems required for repair. Completes written assessment as required by work order process.
• Responds to work orders within residence halls, sometimes while rooms are occupied by students. Communicates with occupants, Residence Director, Residence Assistants and the education office, keeping them apprised of status of work orders.
• Assists outside contractors as required. Ensures clear communication with management on all projects with a goal of on-time and on-budget project completion.
• Orders supplies as needed.
• Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
• Assists other skilled and non-skilled trades employees in resolution of high priority issues. May be called upon to assist in other areas of building maintenance should all HVAC work orders be completed.
• Follows all safety protocols, specifically all lockout/tagout procedures, to ensure a safe working environment.
• Any and all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
• High School graduate with trade school training in HVAC/R theory and practice.

Experience:
• Completed 3-year apprenticeship or 3 years trade experience

Licenses / Certifications:
• Valid Driver’s License
• Section 608 EPA Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• CM or CMS from Refrigeration Service Engineers.
• LCR from HVAC Excellence.
• Familiar with the operations of commercial kitchen HVAC/R.
• Experience with operation and maintenance of water source heat pumps.

REQUIRED SKILLS

• Knowledge of the tools required for the trade, including voltmeters,charging equipment,gauges and hand tools.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints,work orders, technical manuals.
• Experience troubleshooting digital,electronic and pneumatic control systems.
• Must be able to read plans and carry them out using the tools of the trade.
• Understands and follows all codes and safety practices required by the Institute or government agencies.
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to be adaptable, dependable and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
• Must display a high level of energy and self-motivation.
• Strong customer service skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Must be able to work at both locations of the CIA California Campus (Greystone in St. Helena, CA and Copia in Napa, CA). Must possess own transportation in order to travel between locations during the work day as required.
• Must be able to work overtime on nights and weekends as required by business needs.
• Employee may be required to work on different shifts, work schedules, and report to various supervisors based upon the needs of the Institute.
• Must be available when the job requires, which may mean evening and weekend work in emergency situations, or in rotating on call schedules.
• Able to bend, stoop, or reach as needed.
• Physically demanding and often requires heavy lifting of material weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, climbing to heights above twenty feet (20′).
• At times, the work environment may be extremely hot or extremely cold. Work may be required in walk-in refrigeration units or other cold areas. Position requires work outdoors, sometimes extreme summer temperatures, on rooftops, in electrical rooms, crawl spaces and confined areas where heat is sometimes 110-120 F.
