Teaching Kitchen Culinary Instructor (Jamaica Plain)

The Culinary Instructor is primarily responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing culinary training of Community Servings “Teaching Kitchen” program participants to ensure the development of job skills necessary to secure employment and succeed within the Food Service industry

Department: Kitchen Schedule: Full Time

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Confers with the Teaching Kitchen team to determine training needs
• Develops “Teaching Kitchen” program curricula (hard skills) and class schedules
• Teaches trainees in the basics and more advanced skills of culinary arts by following established curricula
• Supervises cooking and coordinates trainee assignments to ensure economical and timely food production
• Trains participants in methods of food preparation and cooking, sizes of portions, and garnishing of foods to ensure food is prepared in prescribed manner
• Supervises trainees through on the job, hands-on training. Demonstrates professional culinary techniques and methods and projects a professional attitude and manner at all times
• Conducts training sessions/classes with trainees in culinary methods, sanitation, and safety by following an established curriculum
• Works with placement and recruitment partners by communicating all pertinent issues concerning individual trainees
• Conducts weekly culinary assessments and maintains records of progress
• In conjunction with the Teaching Kitchen team, formulates training policies, programs, and schedules, based on knowledge of identified training needs, company production processes, business systems, or changes in products, procedures, or services
• Selects appropriate instructional procedures or methods such as individual training, group instruction, self-study, lectures, demonstrations, simulation exercises, role play, and computer-based training
• Organizes and develops training manuals, reference library, testing and evaluation procedures, multimedia visual aids, and other educational materials
• Maintains records and prepares statistical reports to evaluate performance of and monitor progress of trainees

• Demonstrated ability to teach culinary arts and food preparation
• Prior experience in the food service industry
• Experience with safety and food handling sanitation standards
• Skill in interpersonal relations and effective communication with a multi-cultural client
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Allergy & ServSafe Certifications

Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree and three to five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
